From the moment we were born, we were taught how to deal with the harsh Nordic weather conditions. And as a result, we welcomed it! We learned to embrace the outdoors with open arms, regardless of the weather. This is how we were raised, and this is how Kastel Shoes was born.

In our Nature Lab, we explore new ways to make shoes that perform better, last longer, and leave a smaller footprint. Here are some of the materials and concepts that have made it from lab to street.
Traditional waterproof membranes are effective until they fail, often due to minor wear like a small pebble puncture. Drawing inspiration from the durable PU raincoats of fishermen, we crafted shoes from this robust material. The result: footwear that withstands time and elements with increased longevity.
Norwegian wool. Naturally prepared for weather. Wool is strong, breathable, and water-resistant by nature — just like the animals it comes from. We use Norwegian wool to stay close to our roots and reduce unnecessary transport. A smart material for shoes built for the outdoors.
3D-knitted wool. Light, breathable, and easy to care for. Wool keeps your feet cool, fresh, and dry — no synthetic treatments needed. The 3D-knit construction adds airflow, reduces waste, and gives a flexible fit. And when it needs a refresh? Just toss it in the wash.
Less parts. Less waste. Same performance. We’ve made it standard to reduce the number of components in every new Kastel shoe. Smarter design means less waste — without compromising on function or durability. Since 2019, every style has been built this way.
Smarter sizing. Less waste. Instead of producing half sizes, we developed a size insert that adjusts the fit by half a size. It helps reduce overproduction, cuts down on returns, and makes sizing more flexible — all without adding complexity to the supply chain.
Hemp treated for weather. Naturally strong. We’re exploring hemp as a low-impact alternative to polyester. It's strong, breathable, and grows with less water than cotton. By treating it with natural waxes, we’ve added water resistance — without the use of harsh chemicals.

Inspired by the skate-shoe culture of the 90s, 13-year-old Andreas Malo Dyb decides he’ll one day start a Norwegian sneaker brand.
Andreas studies Industrial Design in Milan before returning to Norway to work at Dale Skofabrikk — where he learns classic shoe craftsmanship from the ground up.
Andreas gains hands-on experience working with Norwegian outdoor footwear brands, building knowledge in weather-specific performance.
