My Kastel Shoes – by Mari Melilot

As a clothing designer, it’s in my nature to want to add a little twist to the things I wear. It could be something as simple as switching out shoelaces, adding decoration, or adding a function I feel is missing from a garment. That’s why is perfect for me!

The shoes come with little Velcro patches on the back and side that you can mix and match however you like. Of course, I had to sew my own patches to match a freshly made linen shirt for summer!

If you’re not quite ready to pull out the sewing machine, there are still so many ways to customize your shoes. For example, you could thread ribbons through the lace holes and tie small bows across each row instead of zig-zagging a single lace. You could also add beads to the laces for a playful twist!

I’m just getting started with making patches for my Kampen shoes, but so far I’ve made reflective ones, embroidered ones, floral leather patches, and the ones that match my shirt.

Through my work, I teach people how to sew clothes that fit their own body — through books, sewing patterns, and workshops. In my latest book, Enkel omsøm, you’ll find practical tips on how to breathe new life into the clothes you already own, so they can live with you for as long as possible.

Warmly,

Mari Melilot
